What Happens to A Skill You Don’t Use?

Think about this: if a tree falls in the woods and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? The truth is there are a lot of questions that border on philosophical that demand answers. However, for Muneer, not all questions need to be answered. For example, have you ever wondered what happens to a skill you don’t use?

If Practice Makes Perfect, What Happens If You Stop?

A lot of people tend to spend huge amounts of time and money to learn new skills. But then, a lot of people also believe that once a skill is learned, it stays with us forever. Meanwhile, others think that the only way to keep a learned skill is to practice it. Constantly. But, what really happens to a skill you don’t use? Will you lose a skill you don’t practice regularly? The answer may surprise and even disappoint you. Because the truth is, we may never know for certain.

Use It or Lose It

Skills improve with practice. And if you do not put a skill to use, you will not improve. Indeed, practice makes perfect. In fact, experts say that to be an expert in anything, you need to spend at least ten thousand hours using that skill.

So, if you’re still focusing your time in wondering how to best develop your skill, it’s time to stop.  After all, focusing on questions that may not have definitive answers is just a waste of time. Especially if you don’t have much time to waste. Instead, focus on practicing those skills you have learned but haven’t used for a while. Because, as sure as the sun shines in the sky, this is true—if you practice, you will improve.
